Instead of trying to improve Buffalo’s nationally embarrassing homicide solve rate, these 8-10 cops had other things in mind. They were on a hunt to find drivers’ who were operating motor vehicles without insurance, so they can get such vehicles towed off the road. Forget solving homicides…there were kickbacks to be had.
On the afternoon of August 28, 2017, Officer Richard Lopez and his many friends thought they had found one in 19 year-old Tiamonie Brown, the 19-year-old full time employed young lady depicted in the video. The boys in blue were all set for the big tow when Ms. Brown did the unthinkable… she called her insurance agent who explained to Lopez and crew that there was an error on the insurance companies end… that she HAD valid insurance on her vehicle throughout.
Lopez didn’t want to hear it. In fact, he really didn’t want to hear it, as Brown was twisted, her hair pulled, neck sprained, and thrown to the ground by numerous men in uniform who were over twice her age. Brown’s car, which she had purchased, for work, which she treasured AND kept insured… was towed. Her unblemished criminal record… now tarnished. For having insurance when Lopez wanted to make a big bust when he thought she did not have insurance. Known, in official law enforcement parlance, as obstructing governmental administration.
It gets worse. Brown was made to pay the impound fee twice… due to another city hall “mix-up.” Her hard earned money… money actually earned for serving her community… gone. Her job is now in jeopardy, as they are giving her 30 days to get these charges dismissed.
Some people say that if you don’t break the law, you don’t have anything to worry about. Those are typically people who live in much different neighborhoods and have a much lighter skin tone than good people such as Tiamonie Brown.
